Belief in the "Rapture" is established in most Christian churches.
Most Christians believe literally in the following verses of ST Matthew, 24th chapter. To save space I am condensing, but you should read the whole chapter to better understand the concepts of an event that will take place and remove Christ's elect from the earth, according to the Christian belief. This page is obviosly written for the believer and for those who woud like to understand most mainstream denominations. These concepts do not adhere to all branches.
The disciples asked Christ when would the time of the end take place and Jesus answered: "Take heed that no man deceive you, for many shall come in my name, claiming to be Christ or the Messiah and they shall deceive many." But "au contrare", if one reads well, it doesn't say this earth shall cease to exist, rather the world as we have known it. Otherwise Jesus would have made a contradiction when saying He would return and reign 1000 years. In other areas, the Bible seems to be saying it will never end, so therefore Christ is speaking of an event that will change the world as we know it.
First, you will see years of war and rumors of war. Nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom: there shall be famines and pestilences ( disease, plagues are but a few categories), and earthquakes in divers places.
Many shall be slain for believing in me. Many false prophets will rise and convince/deceive many.
But first, this message and the teachings of the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto the nations, then shall be the end times." In the history of the earth, when did it become possible for His teachings to have gone throughout the earth. Only in recent years with the advent of the airplane and vast communication techniques. Who would have dreamed of T V or computers relaying audio/video information. Probably no area of the world has not broadcast HIS story.
Except for the elect, no flesh would be saved, but for my elect, those days will be shortened. There will be great days of tribulation just before I appear in the clouds. Horrible things will be taking place upon the earth, and the tribes of the earth will mourn as they see the Son Of Man coming in the clouds of heaven." This is HIS words. Just look at the dangers we in America are now facing. We hear almost daily of dirty bombs (nuclear waste) or even a regular nuclear bomb may (almost for certain) be in your near future. Now how distant does HIS prophetic words become? But remember the Word also said.........
He shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they shall gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. When the follower of Christ's teachings gather evidence the differences in this man from all others is outstanding. Debunkers in the faih of Christians through the centuries made fun of the virgin birth, but today no intellectual can possibly perceive this as a difficult feat. If one believes in a creator, then that same person would have to be deprived of normal intelligence to not see the ease in which a creator of the heavens and the earth could surely create a virgin birth with or without test tube, etc. Why does man have such a simplistic view of God, but an over inflated ego of themselves? Is this not the epitome of arrogance and doesn't it provide an insight into fallacies of the mind? What scientist declares he has all the answers, yet can not accept there might be another being with a superior state of intellignce and therefore created this world in which we live? Arrogance or ignorance? When we can get past our own fear of this possibility, we can begin to see things more clearly perhaps. I truly believe most if not all athiests are afraid of a God, otherwise they wouldn't spend so much time trying to force all prayer or mention of God out of public life. Is this not forcing their will upon the majority? Wait a minute; am I mistaken or wasn't this country built upon a belief in God? Then if we want to keep our constitution intact, why do we allow a very small minority to usurp our founding fathers establishment of this country. Why if this is a country free to worship as they please, forced to accept a companies policy to not hire you if you have fundamental beliefs? I personally don't accept for myself some of the fundamentalists teachings, but I can walk on past and allow them the right to believe as they wish as long as they do no harm to another. Jim Jones and other so-called extremists must not be allowed to control any more than an atheist or any other belief force their view or exert control over another. We have always had extremists who exert violence upon another but we must not allow our country to be taken over by these groups or persons. As I write this, I am listening to details of Daniel Pearls murder. Does this faction represent all of Islam; I think not. I do not believe in Islam, yet I can respect the right of someone else doing so as long as they don't do harm or exert control upon others. The same should or must be applied to Christians also. God gave us all a free mind; a right to make our own choice and live by the results of our decisions. Obeying the law of our land; loyalty to our country and the right to freedom of religion must remain. No other country has ever had the privileges this country has and many are covetous or jealous, but others are controlling and as George W Bush said; the axis of evil.
Rape is about power! A small minority who take it upon themselves to try and rid the world of any belief but their own is another form of power control. This is a weak person or group. Not a self - assured, confident and strong person or group out to better the world. An example is the refusal to accept a nativity display, yet with glee wallow in glory if they can prevent it from being displayed. Why can some respect ones right to revere Buddha, Mohammed, the gods of India, etc., yet an atheist be driven to rage over display of Christianity. This to me portrays a fear of a Supreme Being, therefore to control their fear, they will exert power/rape to destroy it's display. Most Christians will allow you without victimizing your right to disbelieve, but most atheists go into a fury for having to gaze upon a display of any kind depicting God or Christ. Is not fear the answer to their rage?
Now study the prophecies of the Bible or teachings of Christ and you will see the prophets made no mistakes; if they stated a future event, it happened. Next read what Christ said about the latter days and you will find many of these prophecies becoming clear. Through study, one becomes knowledgeable and knowledge produces the ability to think for ones self, therefore read, study and be influenced by the integrity of your own mind. If you believe in the literal infallible Christ, then you must take responsibility to read for yourself. If you can read, then you need no one to interpet; just you and the mind God gave you.
Infringement on the right of others? These are aggressive rapists who seek power to appear big. Like the school bully or the loud mouth in a bar; "no class." As earlier stated, cowards never pick on someone who is bigger, they pursue the weak or vulnerable, for then they feel strong; "cowards all." Anti abortionists have a right to believe in perserving life; they have no right to kill the doctor, nurses or others who don't believe the same. Again, you have the bully who refuses to leave it to God's judgement, because they put themselves higher and act as executioner. They have committed murder, so what kind of mind but a tyrant takes over the role of judgement.
If one is familiar with Bible prophecies, it is easy to see why many believe these are latter days that will bring about the return of Christ, the Jewish belief in the Messiah's return and the advent of the elect being spared the wrath upon the earth. What of the misguided who try and bring about the advent, believing they have the power to instigate Gods actions. These individuals are usually extreme in many ideas and seek followers to sate their lust for power. Of course this is a type of illness of the mind, but it is also a weakness of mind that causes people to follow alarmists and power hungry narcisists.
